FAIRLAWN: A police chase that ended in a five-car crash closed West Market Street outside Summit Mall for several hours Thursday night.
One vehicle flipped over and caught fire in the accident around 5 p.m.
Authorities say two people were injured.
The accident was in front of the Akron/Fairlawn Hilton and involved at least one vehicle parked in the hotel’s parking lot.
Power lines were knocked down in the area as a result of the crash.
Firefighters had to use foam to extinguish the car fire.
Fairlawn Fire Lt. Dave Young said police officers were pursuing a vehicle eastbound on West Market Street when it crashed.
Young said the vehicle went off the south side of the road, hit a tree, sheared a utility pole, flipped on its roof, struck a parked SUV, then caught fire.
Young said police officers pulled two injured occupants from the burning vehicle. Their injuries do not appear to be life threatening.
A Fairlawn police officer said the incident is still being investigating and declined to release any further details.
The Summit County Accident Reconstruction Unit was called in to assist in the investigation.
