COPLEY: Copley Township's fire department is looking to improve emergency communications between firefighters in area townships.

The portable fire department radios are obsolete, but can be upgraded to strengthen emergency communication between Copley's and Sharon Township's fire department, which regularly provides mutual aid.

A recent radio upgrade put Summit County fire departments, including Copley, on a more efficient band, but Sharon’s fire department only has one portable radio capable of operating on the same radio frequency.

Copley recently sold six of its 13 older radios to the University of Akron and Wednesday township trustees approved a fire department request to donate three to the Sharon Township department.

According to the department request, "Sharon will pay to upgrade these radios for use on mutual aid calls with Summit County P25 (system) departments, but especially with Copley. This improves firefighter safety for Sharon and Copley personnel at no cost to Copley."
